The Sr Instructional Designer proactively consults with operational leadership teams to identify learning opportunities that help solve business problems. They impact business outcomes by leveraging Learning and Development and business expertise to proactively influence business decisions. They possess the ability to conduct needs analysis to construct root-cause analysis with leaders to identify whether business issues should be addressed through Learning Solutions and can influence various outcomes. They propose solutions, scope, cost impact, and effectiveness against the solution, monitor the implementation, and assess the impact of the solution.

The Instructional Design Consultant works with business leaders to prioritize learning needs, identify opportunities to build sustained performance, and agree on what defines success. They are the main liaison between business and Learning Solutions. They are responsible for ensuring that all Learning Solutions partners are involved as needed for each learning solution proposed, and all teams understand the downstream impact of decisions and project-related details. They are also responsible for funneling information back to the business - for telling the "story" of the support provided by Learning Solutions to the business, including success, measurement, project changes, key learnings, and project-related information. They communicate with their business partners about the alignment of learning initiatives and the impact they have on business outcomes.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Define Business Outcomes
    • Consults with Director/ Sr. Director/VP level business leaders on a proactive basis, focusing on the forward-looking, organizational level
    • Uses a variety of analysis tools to Define Business Outcomes with business partners: Training Sustainability Analysis, Cost-Benefit Analysis, Context Analysis, Audience Analysis, Job-Task Analysis, and Content Analysis
    • Proactively identifies the underlying causes behind employee and/or business performance issues
    • Advises business partners on when training will have an impact on business goals and the most appropriate learning solution(s) for their needs
    • Proactively identifies skill-related risks to employee and business performance
    • Effectively communicates with key stakeholders, including communicating the potential impact of the full range of learning interventions available and setting expectations when interventions are not realistic
    • Identifies business outcomes and learning objectives that:
      • State actual performance that will be achieved using business terms and concepts (business acumen)
      • Clearly indicate how success could be measured
    • Develops innovative approaches to business problems, not always a learning solution
    • Uses the Outcomes Planning Wheel or other tool to clarify business outcome, transfer climate, and business responsibilities to achieve success
  • Acts as the Primary Point of Contact for the Business
    • Can collaborate with partners outside of Learning to solve performance-related issues and talent trends
    • Demonstrates the ability to think holistically and proactively communicates impacts to other departments (Resource Planning, Vendor training, OGS Training, etc.)
    • Authorizes scope and priority changes in partnership with the business
    • Establishes credibility with senior leaders and managers
    • Engages senior leaders to ensure participation in Learning Transfer activities and training reinforcement
    • Manages expectations of business leaders, including timelines, appropriate solutions, value of line manager involvement in transfer and reinforcement, and impact to business goals
    • Sets appropriate expectations for all applicable stakeholders (e.g., Learning Solutions Team, business leaders, learners) to ensure ongoing support and achievement of committed initiatives
    • Negotiates with and challenges business partners about learning assumptions when appropriate
    • Engages leaders in change management strategies in addition to learning initiatives
    • Proactively prioritizes learning initiatives with business partners for the highest impact on the business
    • Articulates Learning Solutions point of view in decision making interactions
    • Prepares presentations and shares reports at senior levels that communicate broad and organizational specific learning strategies, successes, and opportunities
  • Effectively Communications with Learning Solutions Partners Ensuring Learning Alignment with Business Goals
    • Provide explanations and share information with others cross-functionally, on the most complex issues
    • Maintains and ensures communication / understanding of Learning Solutions resource forecasting pipeline
    • Cross functional team collaboration - pulling in appropriate learning solutions team as needed
    • Possess the ability to plan, organize, coordinate, execute, track, and evaluate projects
    • Ensures efficient and comprehensive hand off initiatives that are moving from Pipeline to Active
  • Demonstrates Solid Understanding of Learning Capabilities
    • Maintains a deep understanding of the inventory of learning programs and can forecast and plan resource requirements for implementation
    • Proactively shares business impacting ideas with colleagues and engages in cross-functional working groups to solve complex learning problems
    • Possesses the knowledge of and skills for executing L&D processes
    • Stays abreast of L&D theories, frameworks, and latest trends
  • Learning Measurement
    • Uses data and metrics to analyze business needs and demonstrate the impact of L&D interventions
    • Effectively tells the learning story
  • Business Acumen
    • Possesses sufficient knowledge of the business and operations for business units or functions the L&D professional serves to recommend learning solutions and evaluate business results
    • Stays aware of the organization’s talent strategy to align learning solutions to talent programs (retention efforts, hiring strategies, etc.)
    • Possesses knowledge of general business fundamentals and models, finance, and management principles
    • Possess knowledge of the organization’s business model, operations, financial goals, and competitive position
    • Supports organizational values and culture

Required Qualifications:

  • Working understanding and can represent the discipline and complexities of the learning organization including adult learning theory, instructional design, facilitation, project management, and instructional technology
  • Knowledgeable of and able to suggest learning solutions best practices
  • Proven excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proven ability to appropriately analyze and ensure full understanding of business problems and desired outcomes
  • Proven ability to use appropriate consultative and assessment techniques to address performance needs relative to business goals
  • Demonstrates understanding of applicable business structures and strategies (e.g., business segments, Benefits vs. Services, inter- relationships)
  • Proven ability to collaborate with appropriate resources (e.g., designers, business partners, SMEs, business leadership) to facilitate development of appropriate scope of the solutions
  • Proven ability to understand appropriate training technology to recommend effective learning solutions
  • Proven ability to establish credibility with senior leaders and managers
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain relationships that inspire and build trust
  • Proven aptitude to encourage collaboration and work across the functional areas of learning to foster teamwork and high performance to deliver on the organization’s most important goals
  • Proven ability to challenge the established facilitation approach and verify that it meets the learning styles and needs of the audience

The salary range for this role is $71,600 to $140,600 annually based on full-time employment. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
